Tyrannous Rex
Tyrannous Rex is a work I made in 2003. Here are some quotes from reviews and the press blurb I used at the time:
“Pinch me. It’s possible I only dreamed this show.”
EDMONTON JOURNAL
“Awe-inspiring.”
SYDNEY MORNING HERALD
“Tour-de-force … Brilliant”
MONTREAL MIRROR
Rex may have been a better lover had he not been such a bore. If there was not wicked pleasure in the telling, I might have left this story at that. But after all, detail is always welcome…
Tyrannous Rex is an elegantly twisted tale set on the Scottish moors about the awkward and disastrous seduction of a sensitve middle-aged man by a coquettish gypsy one-third his age. When an invitation to afternoon tea is mysteriously delivered by a black leopard riding a bicycle, Rex, the titular Lord of Brocklehirst House, and his domineering wife, Lady Celia, are introduced to the disarming MacDoogal family. At Teddy MacDoogal’s suggestion, Celia takes in young Irma to begin her education and groom her for a society debut. But naturally, all is not what it seems. Under the direction of Mark Chavez, Gunn hopscotches gamely between the oddball nobles, their servants and a family of dubious whisky distillers, creating a sprawling manor house with one stool, a kilt and masterful physicality.
