At the Sans Hotel
I am presently making a new work. It was a psychological detective story and fragmented love story inspired by the Cornelia Rau affair, the fiction of Paul Auster and the photography of Gregory Crewdson. It seemed an intriguing combination. Cornelia Rau is the German woman who was mistakenly detained at the Baxter Detention Centre. The authorites thought she was an illegal immagrant; she thought she was Anna Schmidt.
Of course, somehow in all of this I got confused and made an entirely different show called exercises in hopelessness.
Beginning in twilight, At the Sans Hotel is a work that deals with emotions - longing, confusion, anxiety and grief. A woman has to go outside herself and become a French woman called Sophie who runs a community centre to get back inside. It’s funny that way.
This work premieres at Theatre Works in March 2010.
